Why Use a Warehouse Labeling Specialist?

Warehouse labeling projects are better when a specialist is used. Industry best practice experience, in-house production and fully trained installation employs are key to efficient, cost-effective and accurate completion. They are critically important when planning a warehouse labeling job.

Professional Rack Label Installers

A specialist warehouse labeling company offers a variety of key components which all begin with the initial consultation. First, they will listen to your situation and consider the options. This enables them to provide professional guidance on labeling systems and material specifications that best suit your needs. They can offer production timelines, and create installation schedules, to meet your deadlines or to work around your operation. Not forgetting quality control provisions to help avoid unnecessary delays.

Exploratory Considerations and Ideas

Depending on the information you have available and how integrated you want the specialists to be, a visit to site, or even a face-to-face meeting with samples and drawings, can considerably expand the possibility of exceeding initial plans. ASG Services, one of the world’s leading names in the field, utilize their technical sales team to do just this. They are often at customer sites and head offices, discussing new projects, re-configurations, and system improvement projects.

Warehouse labeling specialists draw on a wealth of experience and from their archives of work.  They can create optimized designs for your warehouse labels that bring efficiencies in material usage, reducing costs as well as installation time and therefore labor cost.  As a quick example, combining multiple location references on one label means only one label needs to be applied, saving on installation and material costs.

Label Concept, Design and Creation

Warehouse label designs are not complex by nature, however with careful consideration and smart use of space, colors and content mix, they can be extremely effective and introduce a considerable improvement to the professional appearance of a distribution center. Not only is this good for operational efficiencies, but it also improves morale and employee care in their work environment.

Once the design structure is in place, material choices become paramount to the lifespan of a warehouse labeling system. Durability is obviously important, however there are various levels available to suit the label use. Scan-range may be important, so a reflective material may be adopted.  If labels are used where sunlight floods in, UV protection will be important. Adhesive type is equally as important, depending on the surface and temperature. These are just some of the considerations a warehouse labeling specialist will have.

Durable Materials

At ASG Services, the production team turns base materials into finished goods. This isn't just a nice thing to have, it is a fundamental element in mobilizing a label installation team. ASG for example, can start production immediately, in line with installation start times, where a customer taking an alternative route, may wait weeks for labels to be made, and then more for an installation contractor to be scheduled. This is made possible not only by a dynamic production and installation team, but also by the project managers who work busily in the background, making sure all aspects are addressed and on track.

Project Managed Installations

The project team are also critical in planning installation workflows. minimizing disruption, but more importantly, ensuring their installation teams can work consistently and achieve application rates that meet customer deadlines. The project team’s focus is on the customer and operational needs.

Rack Label Installation Positions

The installation teams are trained in application techniques which are fast, accurate and precise. They are trained in the use of access equipment, working at height, necessary tooling for sign installations, all while observing the safety requirements of ASG and the customer sites.

Reporting to the project teams daily, the two work simultaneously to inform and update the customer of progress, potential issues, and interim checks. This helps avoid delays and disappointment toward the end phases of a job.

Warehouse Label Investment

Buying cheap labels and cheap installation labor seems reasonable at first, and in some cases will work just fine, however, if you do not have someone in-house, who can oversee the project from start to finish and who hasn't had extensive experience of a labeling project, the result may not be what you had in mind, in quality, accuracy and cost.

These are just some of the key features and benefits people can expect when working with experts. The combination of a professional installation and design team, along with in-house production capabilities for all the labels and signs, ensures that customers get the best possible experience when utilizing a warehouse labeling specialist. ASG Services are proud to bring these benefits to our customers every day, with every label we supply and install.

Enhancing Warehouse Efficiency Through Accurate Location Naming and Marking

In the fast-paced world of supply chain management, warehouse efficiency is paramount. One seemingly small yet incredibly impactful tool that often goes unnoticed is the pallet rack label. For warehouse managers, supply chain professionals, and logistics experts, understanding the importance and functionality of these labels can lead to significant improvements in operational efficiency.

Pallet Rack Labels

Understanding Pallet Rack Labels

Pallet rack labels are specialized tags affixed to the racking systems within warehouses. These labels serve to identify locations within the warehouse, enabling quick and accurate identification of where items are stored. This system of labeling is crucial for maintaining order and streamlining retrieval processes.

The labels are often designed to include linear or 2D barcodes, with human readable location references, color coding for level identification, arrows, and in some cases, multiple location data for multi-level and multi-location rack labels.

Unique Insights: Efficiency Through Accurate Location Naming and Marking

1. Streamlined Inventory Management

Accurate pallet rack labeling can significantly enhance inventory management. By providing clear and precise location names, employees can quickly locate and retrieve items with minimal effort. This reduces the time spent searching for products, thereby increasing productivity and reducing labor costs.

2. Error Reduction

Misplaced or misidentified items can lead to costly errors and delays in the supply chain. Pallet rack labels help mitigate these issues by ensuring that every product is stored in its designated location. This accuracy minimizes the risk of human error and ensures that inventory counts remain precise.

3. Improved Workflow Efficiency

Effective location marking simplifies the workflow within a warehouse. Employees can easily follow a logical path when picking and placing items, reducing the chances of congestion and bottlenecks. This streamlined process not only speeds up operations but also enhances overall warehouse safety.

4. Enhanced Data Accuracy

Pallet rack labels are often integrated with warehouse management systems (WMS) through the location references used. This integration allows for real-time tracking and data collection, providing managers with accurate insights into inventory levels and movement. With this data, managers can make informed decisions about restocking, order fulfillment, resource allocation and storage locations for faster moving items.

5. Scalability and Flexibility

One of the key advantages of pallet rack labeling systems is their scalability. As a warehouse grows and evolves, the labeling system can be easily adjusted to accommodate new locations and changes in layout. This flexibility ensures that the warehouse remains organized and efficient, regardless of its size. It is recommended to create your numbering convention with the intention or potential of expansion, just in case. Cost savings in the future can be considerable because of this.

Multi-Level Rack Labels

Implementing Pallet Rack Labels in Your Warehouse

Step 1: Assess Your Warehouse Layout

Begin by evaluating the current layout of your warehouse. Identify key areas where pallet rack labels will be most beneficial, such as high-traffic zones, shipping and receiving areas, and storage sections. Consider areas of expansion and start the numbering sequence away from here. Doing so will allow your numbering to continue and for the existing labels to remain following expansion.

Step 2: Design a Logical Labeling System

Create a labeling system that is intuitive and easy to understand. Use a combination of numbers, letters, and colors to distinguish between different sections and levels of the racking system. Ensure that the labels are large and legible from a distance.

Step 3: Integrate With Technology

If your warehouse uses a WMS, integrate the pallet rack labels with the system. It is likely that your WMS will dictate some format conditions, and there is software available which creates the numbering based on rack layout data provided. Integration with a WMS allows for real-time updates and tracking, enhancing overall data accuracy and efficiency.

Step 4: Train Your Team

Ensure that all employees are trained in the new labeling system. Provide clear instructions on how to read and interpret the labels and conduct regular refresher training sessions to maintain compliance.

Step 5: Regular Maintenance and Updates

Periodically review and update the labeling system to ensure it remains accurate and effective. Conduct regular audits to identify any worn or damaged labels that need replacement.

The importance of efficacy in logistics

A well-planned and executed labeling system is crucial for efficient logistics operations. By clearly labeling pallet racks, it becomes easier to locate specific products, reducing the time and effort required for picking and packing orders. This ultimately leads to increased productivity and faster order fulfillment.

Moreover, an effective labeling system helps prevent errors in inventory management, ensuring accurate stock levels and minimizing the risk of overstocking or running out of products. It also supports proper tracking and traceability of products within the warehouse, improving overall supply chain visibility.

In addition to improving efficiency and accuracy, a comprehensive labeling system can also enhance safety in the warehouse. Clearly labeled racks can help prevent workplace accidents by guiding employees on proper storage techniques and preventing them from accessing potentially hazardous areas.

Warehouse Labels and Signs In Vegas

Beyond the glitz and glamor, behind the towering casinos and bustling entertainment industry of Las Vegas, lies a network of warehouses and distribution centers crucial to the city’s economy. Among these, the recent project of a third-party logistics specialist to a large U.S. retail brand stands out for its meticulous approach to warehouse organization and mobility. ASG Services, a leading provider of rack labeling and warehouse signage, was drafted to ensure not just the implementation of visual cues for efficient day-to-day operations, but also the seamless integration of these systems into a bustling, new facility.

Pallet Rack Labels - Vegas

Best Practices for Rack Label and Sign Installation in Las Vegas, Nevada

Rack Labels Las Vegas

In this blog post, we'll explore the intricacies and impact of rack label and sign installation in Las Vegas, Nevada, focusing on key strategies that ensured success for the third-party logistics company, the large U.S. retail brand, and the end consumer.

The Essentials of Rack Label and Signage Solutions

Warehouse signage and rack labels are more than just stickers you put on shelves. They are indispensable tools for identifying storage locations, directing traffic, boosting efficiency, and ensuring safety in any storage facility.

This section will break down the key elements that transform these labels and signs from visual clutter to strategic components of your workflow. Effective marking and attention to detail significantly enhances a warehouse's efficiency, a key asset in driving profit and favorable customer experience.

Choosing the Right Materials

Shelf Labels Vegas

Selecting durable and long-lasting materials is non-negotiable in warehouses where labels and signs are constantly exposed to dust, temperature extremes, and physical damage. Understanding the warehouse's unique environment is crucial in the selection process. Las Vegas, for example, poses challenges with its arid climate and occasional dust storms, meaning products must withstand excessive dryness, temperature fluctuations and be easily cleaned.

ASG Services' commitment to quality materials ensured that the installed labels and signs would last, even under the most demanding conditions.

Laminated polyester labels are an ideal solution. Polyester is a stable material with a wide operating temperature, which means it doesn’t distort in high or low temperatures. Therefore, the barcode verification rate remains as good as the day the label was applied.  A protective film shields the print face during wipe downs and an unlimited design and full color production process is available.

These were selected for the racks and shelves in Las Vegas and remain ASG Services most popular location label product for the US logistics and distribution industry.

Expanded polyvinyl chloride board is used for its durable, low-cost properties.  This is a staple of the sign industry and used by ASG for their hanging barcode location signs and aisle marker placards.

Full color signs, with logos, location references and barcodes can be applied to this material which can then be formed to specific shapes, allowing for easy reading and scanning.

ASG Services external signs are almost exclusively made from aluminum composite material, a three-layer sandwich of polyethylene between aluminum.  As well as being receptive to most production methods, it is also resilient to almost every weather and environmental fluctuation.

120 doors per side now have large 48” x 48“ external dock door numbers proudly on display in true Vegas style.  The internal dock doors are smaller of course, but still boast customer branding.

The use of high-contrast and highly visible colors significantly improves the readability from a distance, as well as easy level identification. Customers are recommended to consider this as a critical factor in facilities with high ceilings or extensive rack and shelving structures.

Precision Placement

Internal Dock Door Signs

Precision in sign and label placement can make or break the efficacy of your system. A lacks approach will lead to confusion and mistakes. ASG’s installation teams ensure a methodical approach with consistent placement on the beam or in the air, as well as accurate location positioning, ensures that every location is identified correctly and ready for go-live.

Digitally generated designs of each product were developed and customized to specification, during pre-planning. They are tailored to the layout of the client’s rack system, where wire decks are used, totem labels are needed on rack legs, and with color coding for aisle-ways. The customer zones their bulk storage area and rack levels with colors as well as alpha numeric characters, therefore, designs and location data needed to be aligned carefully.

Compatibility with Technology

Linear and 2D barcodes as well as RFID tags are industry standards for inventory management. Therefore, the integration of these technologies into the signage and labeling strategy is critical.

The project in Las Vegas included the installation of linear barcode labels at key points on the racks and hanging signs for scanning. Linear barcodes remain as the most common type of barcode, and often work better on long-range scanning, when barcode signs are installed high in the ceiling space.

The project budget was also considered at this point.  ASG can save customers’ costs in applying standard print barcodes to signs, which hang within normal scanning distance, while the more expensive reflective material is utilized for long-range.

ASG Services’ production methods also allow for customer branding to be added, which the third-party logistics provider valued highly.  Both brands were combined on the signage products, strengthening their relationship, system integration and professional appearance.

Logistics & Planning

Aisle Signs Vegas

Work area coordination and flexibility are important factors to consider, in new build and existing distribution centers.

Managing a large-scale label and sign installation project across the US, required meticulous planning, communication, and a thorough information share exercise.  From the onset, key customer personnel are involved. Implementation teams, IT and the ongoing operation leads are encouraged to contribute to solutions, since each group has their individual requirements.
  • Implementation teams are general focused on efficient project handling and implementation,
  • IT are often more interested in the product capability and accuracy,
  • Operation focused requirements look at ergonomics, design, and durability.

All are budget conscious, but each needs to be considered.

ASG’s project team focuses heavily on aspects ensuring customer understanding, product solution, while also orchestrating installation timing schedules, and performance elements. A unique aspect of this project was the climate. Work processes were streamlined to avoid risks of working in the Mojave Desert heat.

A well-coordinated plan is indispensable, but so is the ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances. ASG Services exhibited both qualities, working around other trades and construction elements to minimize downtime and eliminate conflicts.

Hanging 5,200 barcode signs at twenty-five feet high, along hundreds of feet of storage aisles, can be fraught with obstacles.  This new build was typical, with electricians, systems integration personnel, rack builders, conveyor teams, dock door installers, as well as materials scattered randomly throughout, so ASG’s team needed to make sure their work areas were clear ahead of time to ensure swift progress.

Flexibility also enabled them to modify installation sequencing when changes to the building schedule occurred, ensuring the installation stayed on track and customer deadlines were met.

Implementation and Post-Installation Operations

Line Striping Las Vegas

The effectiveness of a labeling and signage strategy is not fully realized until after implementation. Post-installation adjustments and operations play a critical role in the signage system's overall value.

A shelf or rack structure is an impressive sight, new shiny and waiting to be loaded. Of course, until the locations within those structures are marked, they are not a storage system. A logical naming convention provides the location reference. Those references are applied to ASG Services’ rack and shelf labels, 67,500 polyester rack labels and 356,000 shelf labels for this Las Vegas project to be precise.

This many labels, takes a considerable amount of scrutinization, and phased application.  ASG therefore breakdown the workload into scaled volumes which are manageable and can be approved for customer release, which is important as customers are then able to load products in earnest.
A minimum standard of performance is offered to customers. Developed many years previous, it continues to be accepted by ASG’s customers, as well as being used by its competitors as a benchmark.  All label installations are quality checked during application and on completion.

Ongoing Maintenance

Although ASG Services does not offer an evaluation or maintenance package for their projects, the company does retain all documentation, designs, and location references within their archive.

Labels and signs will be damaged, regardless of how durable ASG can make them, however, re-production is streamlined. Proofs are not required, pricing is reflective of project levels, therefore the turnaround time is massively reduced, ensuring customers receive replacements in the quickest time possible.  This helps to keep their locations active and operation efficient.

The company also worked with the client to develop a maintenance plan that would ensure the continuous functionality of their signage and labeling system, providing periodic checks and maintenance as part of the project's implementation.

The Results and Their Impact

The completion of the rack label and sign installation was more than just the successful application of a visual system, it was a testament to meticulous planning, precise execution, and commitment to the client's success.  The project was completed a week ahead of schedule, thanks to racking teams finishing ahead, which meant the customer was able to test its new facility and initiate operations with breathing room.

The labels and signs will enable the warehouse staff to identify locations quickly and accurately, reducing picking errors and streamlining operations, and are a foundation component in any logistics and distribution facility.

Floor Striping Las Vegas

ASG Services' approach in Las Vegas serves as a blueprint for warehousing professionals looking to optimize their facilities.

By implementing the best practices, understanding customer requirements, applying depth of planning and managed execution, a fast-paced operation can be operational ahead of time.

What is a 2D Barcode?

Understanding the differences

The two general classifications of barcodes are 1D (one-dimensional) and 2D (two-dimensional) and are used in different types of applications. Different technology is also often involved in reading 1D and 2D barcodes.

The differences in 1D and 2D barcode scanning depends on the layout and amount of data each can store. Both are used effectively across a variety of identification platforms and applications.

1D barcodes

Universal product codes (UPC) commonly found in consumer goods, are a good example of these. A UPC employs a variable series of spaces and lines to encode data. The linear barcodes can only contain a few dozen characters and gets physically longer as data is added. Because of this, they are limited in performance as the bars become compress and scanning technology struggles to read the separation, therefore they tend to be 8-15 characters in length. Similar is true for other barcode symbologies.

2D barcodes

QR1 Code, Data Matrix, or PDF417, all use squares, dots, hexagons, and other shapes to encode data. 2D barcodes can contain more data (up to 2000 characters) than 1D codes while appearing physically smaller than 1D. Because data is encoded on both, the vertical and horizontal arrangement of the pattern is read in two dimensions.

The main advantage of a 2D barcode is that it isn’t limited to alphanumeric information. It can also contain website addresses, images, voice, and other binary data. Because they are very small, 2D barcodes are used to mark objects that 1D labels are impractical for.

2D barcodes help track everything from surgical instruments to electronic printed circuit boards. Electronics, medical equipment, and pharmaceutical companies must provide a large amount of tracking information on very small items. U.S. FDA’s UDI rules, for example, call for several pieces of information to be included on certain types of medical devices. Due to their small size, 1D barcodes are impractical for these applications.

2D is versatile

Industry and medical professions are turning to 2D barcodes for many reasons, the key of them being their versatility. 1D barcodes are limited to about 20 characters while Denso Wave’s QR Code can hold up to 7,000 digits or 4,000 characters of text.

Only certain scanners can read 1D barcodes while most smartphones, including Android and the iPhone, can easily read 2D barcodes. They can also be used to import data from other files and sources such as MS SQL Servers and MS Office. This makes integrating with your company’s current tracking methods possible.

Other uses of 2D barcodes

Tax returns

Once tax form creation is completed, it can be printed out along with a 2D code and then mailed to the appropriate tax authority which can then gather data quickly by scanning those codes.

Logistics and distribution

Order data (PO number, product codes, shipping date, quantities, etc.) can automatically be entered into the receiver’s computer, greatly speeding up the process of inventory tracking and data provision.

Driver’s license

A driver’s name, address, license number, expiration date, driving restriction codes, and other information can be encoded in a 2D symbol that is then printed on the operator’s license.

ASG Services have helped companies transition from 1D to 2D warehouse identification for many years. They are carryout performance testing with customer equipment to ensure verification, scan speed and distance capabilities meet the needs with dimensional restrictions. Optimizing a product ensures performance and cost effectiveness, however the company always recommends the most appropriate, and interestingly 1D remains the most common barcode supplied their warehousing and distribution market.

With lower costs, 2D barcodes are quickly becoming the predominant data storage method. Contact ASG Services to discuss your warehouse label and sign needs, they can help with custom designs and content to meet your individual requirements. Their systems are able to create almost any type of barcode symbology and with the latest production technology in-house, they are able to meet your needs.

Take Control of Your Inventory

Do you lose items? Are you unsure exactly what you have and how many are in your warehouse? Its fine to say no, you’re not alone. Warehouses around the world of all sizes, face the constant challenge of maintaining accurate inventory records. It’s the work done before a product is called off that separates the amateur from the professional and why supply chains strive for the ‘next-best-thing’ which will give them the advantage.  Here are some basic points we think you should consider when moving from a small warehouse, to a more robust environment, capable of handling the growth coming your way.

Choose a management system

Warehouse Management Software is not simply for stock taking, it can help optimize processes in your supply chain, movement of goods and pin point problem areas for improvement.  In its most basic form, product names, SKU, description, quantity and location are key items to list, and you may currently use Excel to record and manage stock, which works great for many small firms, but as you grow it will become restrictive and limit your capabilities.

In migrating from a small storage scenario to a more formal setup, you’ll most likely have or are in the middle of selecting, your equipment.  From the correct racking type for the weight of goods stored, to dock ramps which help you unload and load vehicles easier, material handling equipment is important for both operational and safety considerations.  But these are all infrastructure, warehouse management software sits between that and the people who give the facility life.

WMS systems come in number of configurations, some developed for specific industries, others which are configurable and scalable as your company grows.

Plan your warehouse space

You must plan to maximize the storage space for every inch of your warehouse. It is a crucial warehouse management practice that does not cost much. The organization of an area is important to use every bit of space for storage and movement of goods, quick and safe. All the products should be accessible, so you do not have to move others to reach the intended. Take into consideration stock, office, storage, working areas, and empty pallet storage. Additionally, you must ensure that there is enough space for weight carrying machines and forklifts to move around.

If you need racks and shelves, consider the load capacity and build requirements.  Professionally installed equipment from certified suppliers ensure a safer work environment and helps reduce future costs in upgrades and replacements. The Rack Manufacturers Institute (RMI) (mhi.org/rmi) is a collection of companies who drive standards in the US.  They would be a good starting point who will help you find a local distributor.

Implement a labeling convention

Street signs are used on roads, name plates on doors in buildings, and in warehouses, location labels are placed on racks and shelves which identify locations and save workers lots of time finding inventory needed.

Labeling and naming warehouse storage locations becomes increasingly important as stock variations and volumes increase, not to mention increases in the number of people working in your warehouse. Having a simple but effective method is therefore just as important as having the right forklift truck or wrapping machine.

If you haven’t yet, begin naming locations using the follow process. It’s a simple and very popular way of creating your first location name which can be applied to a rack label, floor label or hanging sign.  If you follow this principle for the other locations and storage configurations, your reference file will take shape quickly as a virtual warehouse location system.

How to number a warehouse:

1. Name your aisle A
2. Name the bay 001
3. Name the level 1
4. Name the slot A
5. Combine and segment A 001 1A

When added to an Excel document, the first three references may look like this:
Aisle Bay Level Slot Visual Barcode
A 001 1 A A 001 1A A0011A
A 001 1 B A 001 1B A0011B
A 001 1 C A 001 1C A0011C

Label layouts could be as simple as handwritten entries on blank labels, or pre-printed location labels for a more professionally approach, which also help reduce vandalism with durable materials and protective coatings. See the design examples below.  They use the same information in slightly different ways can help you maximize location identification considerably.

Which warehouse label should I use?

Handwritten:

Handwritten Location Label

In small storage facilities, handwritten labels are still the most cost-effective way to identify locations, but once you reach 50, you should really consider pre-printed.  Handwriting 50 wouldn’t be so bad but imagine having someone write 100… not a quick task and mistakes would surely occur.

Pre-Printed Location Labels:

Once you reach over 50 locations, its recommended that you print your rack and shelf labels, to save time and ensure content accuracy.  You then have the option of more durable materials and designs, developed for the intended purpose.  The following, are examples of pre-printed layouts using the same location reference, but with additional functionality to improve usability.

Standard location label:

Standard Location Label
Easier to read than handwritten labels with a uniform layout and more cost effective over 25 locations.  You could create these in-house or use a specialist provider and benefit from durable material options.

Split base location label:

Multi Level Rack Label
Save time and money with split base labels which combine two location references on to one layout.  These could again be produced in-house, or by a supplier such as ASG Services.  Applying one label per two locations also reduces installation time and costs significantly.

Barcode rack label:

Linear Barcode Rack Label
Linear Barcode
2D Matrix Rack Label
2D Barcode

As your warehouse becomes more sophisticated, you may decide to utilize barcode technology.  Linear barcodes are still the most popular choice, however 2D can offer a little more in terms of data held.  If you have a fixed product location, you might use 2D to include more information about the product for better identification.  Using suppliers for these types of location labels will be the smart way of equipping your rack and shelf edges.

Color coded pallet rack labels:

Color Coded Rack Label
For faster identification of locations, color coding is recommended by the leading supplier who point out that people can identify objects faster through color differentiation.  Consider giving each level a set color throughout your facility from floor storage, shelves, racks and even barcode handing signs.  ASG Services also advise layout considerations to help reduce overall cost of products, installations and future operational efficiencies.

Using a digital system instead of a manual process to manage inventory is a must for any progressive firm.  Manual systems reduce efficiency but also increase inaccurate inventory records.  Even a basic system such as an Excel document is a must over paper based.  However, a WMS or ERP is eventually where you should be heading, both of which will take care of inventory management and will help improve your accuracy tremendously.

Cycle counts

Count the items you store. It’s laborious and time consuming, but even with a full force WMS in the largest distribution facility, cycle counts are king.  Physical counts of your inventory should not be an annual activity. Depending on the number of items stored per location and levels of stock movement will help determine their frequency.  Daily, monthly or quarterly are not too frequent.  If you don’t have it on the shelf, you lose business and profit.  If you have too much on the shelf, you also lose too.  Monitoring, recording and analyzing will help make your company more efficient.

Regular operational reviews

Review your warehouse operations all the time to improve your inventory control, from process flow to placement of equipment and viable safety policies. Verifying the maximum use of warehouse space and enhancing the productivity of your employees is also essential. Moreover, implementing strategies such as checking in with your organization and warehouse systems will help in the identification of any problems quickly. Remember those small inefficiencies could harm you in the long run if you do not address them soon.

Stock inventory as per demand

The demand of stock should dictate how you arrange your inventory. You should avoid hoarding excessive amounts of stock throughout the year if there is no regular demand for it. Small to medium sized firms typically sell their total stock holding 3-4 times per year,, therefore holding 1.5 times the average demand volume gives leeway should demand unexpectedly rise. An optimized inventory hold can greatly reduce the cost of storage, as you won't have to pay for more space just to store surplus you don't need.

Employee induction and training

Poorly trained employees could be one of the reasons why your warehouse management system may be failing to reach full potential. Your team needs to be aware of changes, so make sure everyone understands the inventory management practices and policies that you implement. you can't organize your warehouse alone, so make sure your team are up to the job.

Color Coding can Improve Warehouse Efficiency

Warehouse space and locations are typically identified with some kind on name plate, be it a rack labels, aisle signs, barcode hanging signs or floor labels. Whichever are used, they generally have a unique numbering system for that building, area or storage type, which are unique.

In the hunt for continuous improvement, ASG Services strongly recommend you consider color as part of your identification system, because it's easily recognizable by the human eye. Implementing a color-coded system in your facility can provide a host of benefits to your employees, at every stage of your operations. Read further to discover just a few benefits this type of system can bring.

Quick object recognition

The most obvious benefit of color-coded warehouse rack labels is that they can make level identification easier and quicker to determine. Learning and adapting to the system will be easy for employees, because the human brain quickly associates colors and objects when a pattern is observed, so consistent positioning on the rack is also important. Conversely, when an incongruity is observed, such as a blue tomato, the brain immediately forces the individual to resolve the error.

Multi-Level Rack Labels

Color assigns meaning

In fact, you probably already make use of color in your facility to one degree or another. Red warehouse floor striping can designate areas that must remain free of obstructions, possibly because the area is an emergency exit, or fire extinguishers are placed there, and other emergency response aids. Similarly, yellow is often used to designate a step up, staircases, and low-hanging overheads. These colors are used because society has programmed us to understand that these colors mean caution. Other colors can be assigned meaning in your facility in a similar way, ultimately to ensure everything finds its proper place and will work with a 5s implementation if you are considering this for your organization.

Warehouse Line Striping

Use color to designate uses

A modern method of color use in a warehouse is to designate the use for items. For instance, storage bins used for receiving might be blue, while racks assigned to a specific customer might be painted in their brand color(s). Similarly, maintenance and cleaning equipment may be differentiated by color to help prevent contamination or incorrect use. This type of system makes it easier to identify by zones for customers, departments, production stages or other classifications within a storage environment.  Storage areas or zones could be separated by aisle sign and line striping color, separating bulk storage from staging areas, or receiving lanes from rework areas, etc.  Custom aisle signs or marker boards are a remarkably cost-effective product and have a simple yet significant effect in the work place.

Warehouse Hanging Signs

Make product identification easier

Color-coded storage bins and color-coded LPN pallet labels can make it easier to manage the finished products and goods stored in your warehouse, by helping employees keep items of the same type or finished state together. For instance, if your facility produces beverages, each pallet of IPA might receive a yellow LPN label, letting the warehouse personnel know that the pallet must be stored in the IPA aisles or red for wines. The color may also be reflective of a production date for product life cycle. This makes it easier for inventory control personnel to maintain quick and accurate counts and for forklift operators to easily distinguish the pallets they need for shipment orders.

LPN Labels

Visual recognition of current needs

By designating a specific color to locations in a pallet rack face, employees will determine more quickly, which pallet out of 100 or one sitting high above their head is needed to fulfill their next pick. For instance, by going to an aisle, the operator then finds the correct bay. Once there, the levels may be 5 plus high. If only a black on white rack label identifies each level, it becomes more difficult for a person to see and keep track while selecting and retrieve the correct pallet each time.  However, when color is added, it is a far quicker recognition process. Your employees will be able to see the level and concentrate on lifting that pallet more carefully.  In addition, adding a multi-level rack label with corresponding data and colors at operator level, will dramatically improve pick accuracy.

While you'll still rely on barcode identification tags to designate specific locations in your warehouse or a generic line striping color throughout, combining these with a color-coded system can help your operation run more efficiently. The human brain can easily learn to associate colors with meaning and with specific objects, which is why color has already been used throughout history to highlight everything from dangers to corporate brands. By incorporating a color-coded system in your warehouse design, employees will be able to identify destinations, pallets and products more quickly, which will help them perform their duties more efficiently.

Durable Warehouse Labels Outdo Generic Options Every Time

Generic labels can determinate, distort, come unstuck, be easily damaged and even peel, making it more difficult to identify which location the items are stored. In addition to inventory control, custom warehouse labels can also help you meet and maintain important OSHA safety regulations. If you are looking to improve your workflow efficiency, a great place to start is with custom and durable warehouse labels.

Warehouse Shelf Labels

Worth the Extra Cost

Like so many other things in life, spending a little extra on durable warehouse labels instead of buying cheap generic options can help your firm save money over the long-term. Investing in durable custom labels can speed up the workflow process and keep everything moving in the right direction. If your warehouse is haphazardly designed and marked, your workflow process is probably a lot longer than it needs to be. In addition to worker efficiency, long-lasting and easy to read signage is a foundation part of OSHA compliance. Utilizing custom and durable labels for your safety signage as well as your inventory control can help you focus on the important day to day tasks that are involved in the successful running of your company.

Laminated Rack Location Labels

These barcoded labels are one of the most effective time-saving innovations to hit the warehouse industry. With these barcodes, inventory control is more reliable, and it becomes much easier for your floor staff to find the items they need. Laminated custom labels that are durable and long-lasting, will still be easy to read and scan for a lot longer than alternative generic options that are currently available on the market. When you need to know exactly where a certain inventory item is located, a seamless barcode labeling system is one of the simplest and most effective options. Laminated rack location labels can be customized to fit your exact needs and choosing labels that are durable and well-made will save you both time and money in the future.

Floor Labels and Aisle Signs Help You Save Time and Money

Depending on the size and scope of your warehouse, it may be difficult for new workers to find their way around, and even your most experienced staff may sometimes also rely on signage. By having each aisle clearly marked, with both a posted sign and floor labels, you are helping your staff to perform their tasks more quickly and efficiently. Not only do these signs make it easier for workers to identify locations and navigate the warehouse, in some instances, they are also required by OSHA. Achieving and maintaining OSHA compliance is an important part of providing a safe workplace for your staff.

If your firm needs custom durable labels to meet your inventory tracking and OSHA safety compliance needs, the team at ASG Services is here to help. In addition to creating your barcode labels and signs, our project management team can help you streamline your entire workflow process. Specific areas your warehouse could benefit from warehouse labels

A custom warehouse label solution comes in handy in many warehouse settings. It makes operations run smoothly by providing a streamlined framework for stock control, identification and easy tracking. It enhances the visual appeal and overall organization within a warehouse facility, making it possible to pull up a product's entire history with just a simple scan. In other words, warehouses go beyond merely labeling shelves and racks.

Below are some of the areas within a warehouse that can be labeled for maximum efficiency:

Durable Floor Labels
The warehouse floor makes a perfect place for barcode identification. Although many warehouses are overwhelmed with high-traffic for a standard barcode to bear, ASG offers authentic and durable barcode labels that provide a hard-wearing solution. The concrete anchor attachments used help the barcode labels remain in place, even where a warehouse may be operating heavy machines that often cause wear and tear in many typical floor signs.  Click here to visit our metal frame floor labels page.

Rack Labels

Rack labels are very much widespread in the warehouse industry and are usually used to streamline the workflow. Warehouse rack labels allow staff to quickly and easily identify specific locations and products for pick and pack, inventory control, and shipping purposes. ASG Services' warehouse rack label solution comes in a wide range of varieties to cater to the needs of even the most sophisticated warehouse facility. Whether you're in search of adhesive or magnetic rack labels, cold-storage rack labels, or rack frame placards, we've got them all in any shape and size, custom-made to suit your warehouse setting. Click here to visit our rack label page.

Aisle Signs

Aisle signs are equally as important as rack signs, especially in terms of efficiency. It takes time and effort to enter each aisle and start scanning all rack labels in order to arrange each in their respective order. ASG aisle signs, however, go a step further than this and make it easy to even identify broader areas of the warehouse for more convenience. Your staff are simply able to identify specific products much faster without wasting valuable time.  Visit our warehouse signs page.

Above are some of the few areas in which a person can add warehouse labels to their facility to expedite efficiency. Need warehouse signs and labels? ASG offers everything needed to completely label and sign your warehouse setting so that operations can run more smoothly and more efficiently every day.
